Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. (Philippians 4:11-13, 17 NIV)
Have you learned the secret of being content that the Apostle Paul speaks about in Philippians 4? Do you desire to see others living in the Lord’s blessing?
The Apostle Paul was content, regardless of his circumstances. He was not seeking any gifts from the Philippians for himself, instead, he wanted them to receive the blessings that come from giving to others. As Acts 20:35 (NIV) says, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ He wanted to see the Philippians living happily in the Lord’s favor.
When our own circumstances in life are less than ideal, it can be challenging to maintain the right attitude toward others. God’s desire is that we rejoice with others as they rejoice, even when we have needs ourselves. Paul is a great example of someone living with that selfless outlook. Despite the numerous hardships he endured, Paul was completely confident in God’s love and His ability to supply all of his needs. Thus, he had no reason to be envious of anyone else.
Generally I can say that I am content, but periodically I have become distracted by how well others are able to function physically. Given that my physical condition is compromised, that is my area of weakness. So, I have to guard against being envious over other’s ease and success in their mobility.
When I become unduly focused on my own physical frailties instead of the Lord and His goodness, I temporarily lose my sense of contentment, my peace and my overall strength. I’ve discovered that the key to success for me in this area is to stay committed to wanting the best for others, even when I am aware of my own needs. Having that attitude of desiring to see other’s blessed, honors God and leads to His blessing in our own lives
When we desire to see other’s blessed and do all we can to be a part of that blessing, we honor God. In turn, while we aren’t seeking it, He blesses us in ways that we would never have imagined. He is always faithful! We can trust Him!
My prayer is, “Lord, thank you for the many blessings that you have given to me. Please help me to be content in all things. Please help me to be a blessing to others today. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN.
